Salvatore Marino

Azienda Agricola Salvatore Marino is led by talented winemaker Salvatore Marino who started this wine project in 2017. Located in Pachino, within the D.O.C. Eloro Pachino, vineyards grow on land where grape varietals such as Nero d’Avola find their optimal terroir. Pachino is situated at the south-east corner of Sicily. The town sits in the Province of Syracuse, Sicily (Italy). The name derives from the Latin word bacchus, which is the Roman god of wine, and the word vinum, which means wine in Latin; originally the town was named Bachino which eventually was changed to Pachino when, in Sicily, Italian became the official spoken and written language. Therefore a place where the culture of grape cultivation is ancient. With research, passion and commitment and, most importantly, with love for the vineyard, the tradition, and respect for the soil and its natural balance are of prime importance to Turi.

He did not choose this life, this life chose him. Born into a family with five generations of people connected to viticulture and winemaking originating in Pachino, a place with ancient, millenarian culture about vine growing. “Wine is made in the vineyard” according to the ancient saying handed down to him from his grandparents; his vineyards are in “Contrada Buonivini”, not far from the natural reserve “Vindicari”. The vines are planted in free standing bushes and the nature of the land predisposes them to the cultivation of the vines and to the production of wine in a natural manner. Salvatore farms his bush vines exclusively by hand. Hoe and pruning shears are the only farm tools used the most. Seasoned organic manure and the practice of green manure are the only fertilizers used. Following the lunar calendar and emphasizing the need to respect biodiversity with his practices Salvatore adopts a non-interventionist approach in the cellar, crafting artisanal wines with plenty of character. Respect for the environment is vital therefore, being ecologically attentive in the vineyard for the protection of production, landscape and traditions.
